The announcement came from Michael J. Fiorile, president and chief operating officer of WTHR’s parent company, Ohio-based The Dispatch Co.
Cardenas joined WTHR in June 2010 as vice president and general manager. Cardenas replaced Jim Tellus as WTHR general manager. Tellus died suddenly in 2009.
CardenasBefore coming to WTHR, Cardenas was news director for 11 years at Dispatch Broadcast Group station WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio. He was also news director at KPHO in Phoenix from 1996 to 1999, and held other news management positions at stations in San Diego and Norfolk, Va.
“John has done an outstanding job since arriving in Indianapolis,” Fiorile said. “His leadership, commitment to journalism and passion for success continues to strengthen WTHR’s position as Indiana’s news leader.”
WTHR has dominated the ratings in local TV news for more than five years, and continues to sit atop several key demographic categories. Its ratings dominance has been challenged recently by WISH-TV Channel 8 and WXIN-TV Channel 59.
