As a wise old lawyer once told Richard Ellery, the only law you won’t practice at AUL is maritime law. Thirteen years down the road, Ellery would agree.
“I’ve been able to do transaction work, there’s litigation,” said Ellery, who joined American United life Insurance Co. as he was finishing law school at Indiana University in 1996. “Staying motivated isn’t that hard because for me it’s always something new. It keeps it interesting and keeps you on your toes.”
Indeed, he’s been promoted regularly, learning various facets of AUL and parent company OneAmerica, and earning the trust of senior management.
Most recently, he’s been involved in the company’s securities business, which has periodic deadlines. He’s at his busiest between January and May.
Ellery also is the point man for legislative affairs for OneAmerica.
“We review all the legislation that comes through to see how it would or might affect our industry,” he said.
He was in London on business while working in reinsurance on Sept. 11, 2001. When 3,000 people died in the World Trade Center’s Tower One, and all the insurance claims hit at once, the process slowed dramatically.
“The whole reinsurance world blew up and went crazy,” he recalled.
The youngest of eight children, Ellery attended North Central High School, and then Purdue University and IU School of Law. He, his wife and their two children live in Noblesville, where he coaches youth soccer and baseball.
Others may envy the time he spends on outside activities. But community involvement is encouraged at OneAmerica, he said. “I like what I do job-wise, but making money isn’t any good unless you have people you want to share it with and things you want to do.•”
