Mahony is replacing John Johnson, who resigned Jan. 28 to become CEO of East Brunswick, N.J.-based biotechnology company Savient Pharmaceuticals Inc. Johnson is the former CEO of ImClone Systems, which Lilly acquired in 2008.
The change is effective immediately. Mahony has worked at Eli Lilly for about 10 years, the company said. Before her promotion she was in charge of human resources and diversity.
The company said her earlier positions included general manager of its Canadian business. She worked for other drugmakers, including Amgen Inc., Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., and Schering-Plough Corp. for about 10 years before joining Eli Lilly.
Mahony was featured as a "Woman of Influence" by IBJ in 2010.
The company said Steve Fry will assume Mahony's previous human resources and diversity position. Fry was in charge of human resources for Lilly's bio-medicines and emerging markets units.
