The Senate voted 29-21 Thursday to approve the bill extending the state's current texting ban for drivers younger than 18. The House earlier approved a similar bill setting a maximum fine of $500.
Sen. Jean Leising of Oldenburg questioned how police officers would determine whether someone was texting or simply dialing a phone number.
Bill sponsor Sen. Travis Holdman of Markle says the law would help prevent distracted driving and save lives.
Sen. Tom Wyss of Fort Wayne compared opposition to the texting ban to those who were against mandatory seat belts and child restraints.
