About 40 employees make fine-laminate countertops at the Indiana location, according to the Shelbyville News. They can choose to transfer to Hagerstown, Md., to keep their jobs or stay put and receive a severance payment.
The move—prompted by escalating shipping costs and a growing customer base in the Northeast—is expected to take four to six months.
VT Industries has nine facilities that employ more than 1,000 workers across the country, including a plant in New Albany that makes architectural wood doors. The Maryland facility is expected to open in July.
