Subscribe NowCNA, a Virginia-based military think tank, is seeking $30 million from Duke Realty Corp. for allegedly violating its lease obligations relating to property near the not-for-profit’s Alexandria headquarters.
CNA’s complaint, filed Wednesday in Alexandria, stems from Indianapolis-based Duke’s sale of vacant land to the U.S. Department of Defense next to property that contains Duke's Mark Center office complex, which houses CNA.
The Department of Defense plans to build two high-rise office buildings totaling 1.7 million square feet of space and two above-ground parking garages with a total of 4,500 spaces. Plans also call for a remote inspection facility to search for explosives and other harmful materials that could be brought to the site.
“These facilities will have a serious negative impact on CNA,” the not-for-profit's president and CEO, Robert J. Murray, said in a written statement. “Access to our building has already been affected and will get dramatically worse when the new facilities open. … CNA now has the unfortunate distinction of having a bomb inspection facility located immediately adjacent to our building. The Mark Center of today is no longer the setting CNA was promised when we signed a lease on our building 10 years ago."
CNA, which derives its name from the Center for Naval Analyses, provides policy research to government leaders.
