Subscribe NowA federal study shows that Indiana has a lower estimated health risk from air toxins compared with many surrounding states, although northwestern Indiana residents face an elevated risk from industrial emissions.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says the study used U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data from 2005 to estimate risk from air toxins and identify areas of concern for study.
The Post-Tribune of Merrillville says the report examined 177 air toxins and diesel particulate matter from industry and vehicles to calculate risk estimates nationwide. Indiana fared better than many surrounding states.
IDEM officials expect Indiana's numbers will continue to decrease because since 2005 many big industries have shut down or installed emission control equipment.
