Indiana Department of Administration Commissioner Rob Wynkoop says the sculpture's deteriorating condition was discovered two years ago.
A conservator will complete repairs designed to restore the 38-feet-tall, 19,300-pound statute in time for the 2011 Circle of Lights festivities and the 2012 Super Bowl.
A crane on the west side of the monument will remain in place for several weeks while limestone repair work is completed.
The Public Works Division of the Department of Administration oversees most state construction and repair projects.
