The gift will fund the endowed faculty position of Distinguished Professor of Service Learning, a person whose job will including helping to spur more students perform community service work.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Deborah Balogh says the new professorship renews the emphasis on the school's core believe that "knowledge should support a greater purpose beyond ourselves."
The university's Community Programs Center, which coordinates service-learning efforts, says students recorded more than 10,000 hours of volunteer work in the last school year.
