Tony Mason is leaving his post as executive director of the Circle City Classic to become senior vice president of the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee.

Mason, 42, is set to join the Super Bowl Host Committee in April and is expected to work closely with the John H. Boner Community Center to launch the Near Eastside Legacy Initiative, a plan to boost the Arsenal Technical High School campus and near-east side by building a Super Bowl practice facility at Tech.

He also will oversee the development of the National Football League’s Emerging Business Program for Minority and Women-Owned Businesses, as well as coordinate committee volunteer outreach programs.

Mason joins Committee CEO Allison Melangton, who was chosen for the position in October.

The Super Bowl will be held in Indianapolis Feb. 5, 2012. The committee ultimately will have a staff of 13 to 16 full-time paid employees and will recruit 6,000 to 10,000 volunteers to pull off the event.

Mason has led the Circle City Classic since 2000 and has been responsible for growing the event by generating more support through sponsorships and cash. He also secured a television contract with WISH-TV Channel 8 that led to the first live telecast of the Classic Parade.

The Circle City Classic, sponsored by Indiana Black Expo Inc. and the Indiana Sports Corp., is one of the premier black collegiate football games in the nation.
