Greenwood retail store closes
A landmark since it opened in 1978, Value City in Greenwood is closing its doors, officials for the store’s Columbus, Ohio-based parent company said earlier this month.
The store, across U.S. 31 from Greenwood Park Mall, will shut down within six weeks, said Value City spokeswoman Kristin Mack. The store was hurt by competition from Greenwood’s T.J. Maxx, Marshall’s and Target, said a release issued by VCHI Acquisition Co. Feb. 6.
Forty-seven people work at the Greenwood Value City, but it isn’t clear how many, if any, of those employees will be offered jobs at other stores. The parent company is closing three dozen stores nationwide as part of a restructuring.
The Greenwood Value City anchors a strip center at 1230 U.S. 31 North that also is occupied by David’s Bridal and Jo-Ann Fabrics. The property is owned by Value City’s parent, which said it might try to sell it.
