Conexus Indiana and Indianapolis-based Harrison College are rolling out an associate’s degree in logistics.

The program will begin in September for students at Harrison, a for-profit school formerly known as Indiana Business College. The degree will be offered at Harrison’s campus in downtown Indianapolis, online or in combination.

The program is designed to train supervisors, managers, analysts and other workers in logistics.

Logistics—an industry that includes warehouses, distributors, transportation companies and the firms that coordinate them—employs more than 250,000 Hoosiers, ranking the state ninth in per-capita logistics employment, according to a June report by Conexus, an Indianapolis-based trade group focused on manufacturing and logistics.

But, in that same report, Conexus and Ball State University gave Indiana a C grade in human capital, saying that too few people receive the education to prepare them for jobs in the industry.

“Indiana's adult population continues to rank among the least-educated in the nation, leaving Hoosier manufacturing and logistics firms struggling to find qualified applicants for jobs that demand increasingly advanced skills,” Conexus officials said in a statement about the report.

Harrison is by no means the first logistics program in Indiana. Ivy Tech Community College offers a two-year associate’s degree in transportation, distribution and logistics at its Indianapolis campus. Also, Vincennes University offers a two-year business degree in supply chain and logistics management.
