Gen Con Indy, one of the city’s largest annual conventions, drew a record 36,733 unique visitors to this year's event, organizers announced Thursday.

Turnstile attendance was 119,707 for the 44-year-old consumer fantasy, sci-fi and adventure-gaming event, which ran Aug. 4-7 at the Indiana Convention Center.

Game-event participation grew 26 percent, organizers said, with players using more than 250,000 event tickets.

“Gen Con Indy 2011 was simply the best Gen Con ever for us,” said Adrian Swartout, CEO of Gen Con LLC, in a prepared statement.

Gen Con officials predicted the city’s expanded convention center would help attendance grow. Last year’s convention drew 30,000 unique visitors and generated $25.9 million in direct spending, according to hospitality officials. The city has hosted the event since 2003.

The larger convention center convinced Gen Con in April 2009 to sign a five-year contract keeping it in Indianapolis through 2015.
