Jonathan Mayes, who served just over a year as deputy public safety director under Straub, joined the local law firm’s Labor and Employment Practice Group as an attorney late last month.
During his tenure in Indianapolis’ Public Safety Department, Mayes worked with Straub to create new divisions of public safety communication and emergency medical services and “boldly led the department through unprecedented challenges,” he said in an e-mail.
Those challenges included accusations that an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer used excessive force against a 15-year-old who was protesting the arrest of his brother in May of last year. And another officer plowed his police cruiser into a group of motorcyclists, killing one and injuring two others, last August.
Before his job in public safety, Mayes served three years as Indianapolis’ chief litigation counsel.
In his new role, he’ll represent local, regional and national clients in labor and employment litigation.
