Ivy Tech Community College will lease 19,615 square feet at the former ATA Airlines campus at Indianapolis International Airport for a logistics and business education program.

The building will be renovated with as many as eight classrooms and three laboratories, under a plan Ivy Tech and airport officials announced Friday. The first classes are set to begin next year.

The partial reuse of the ATA campus is part of the airport authority’s broader strategy to find reuse for vacant property. The largest parcel is the former airline terminal site on the northeastern end of the airport, which likely will involve air cargo and other logistics-focused tenants.

A consultant’s report completed earlier this year estimated that reuse of the old terminal and other vacant parcels at Indianapolis International and its reliever airports in the metro area could generate up to $63 million annually for the airport by 2040.

The former ATA site at the airport “provides an opportunity for Ivy Tech to extend opportunities to the business community for cost-effective training for their employees,” Ivy Tech Chancellor Kaye Walter said in a prepared statement.

ATA ceased operations in 2008 after being shut out of a team of commercial carriers that flew troops under contract for the U.S. military.
