Graphic Packaging International says it plans to gradually phase out the LaPorte carton factory in the coming months and shift work to other plants around the country. The shutdown is expected to be completed by early next year.
Company vice president Cindy Baerman told the South Bend Tribune that the decision to close the LaPorte factory included consideration of transportation expenses and conversion costs.
The Georgia-based company makes paperboard packaging for food, beverage and other consumer products. It expects to cut at least 80 jobs at other U.S. locations.
