The economy may be stuck in the doldrums, but government and the private sector are continuing to make huge investments aimed at strengthening the region's future.

In 2011, Indianapolis' largest hotel, the JW Marriott, opened, as did the Indiana Convention Center expansion. Construction continued apace on the new Wishard Memorial Hospital. And the city announced it would help back a string of high-profile real estate projects, from transformation of Bush Stadium into apartments to the development of CityWay at Delaware and South streets.

That's not to say it was an upbeat year for Hoosier companies or their workers. Real estate developers faced a barrage of foreclosure lawsuits, for instance, and Eli Lilly and Co., the state's most important company, struggled to offset the loss of patents on key products, including its bestseller Zyprexa.
