The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday that the Indiana Retail Council is opposing a deal struck earlier this week between Gov. Mitch Daniels and Amazon to begin collecting sales tax in 2014.
Council President Grant Monahan says the online company has the technical capability to begin collecting the taxes immediately. He says the delay continues to give the online company a leg up on the bricks-and-mortar businesses he represents.
Amazon says it needs two years to get ready to properly collect the state's 7 percent sales tax from customers. Amazon already collects taxes in five states and plans to begin collecting sales tax in California in September. Amazon has four major warehouses in Indiana.
