Haughville native Steve Downing has joined the board at Christamore House, the neighborhood center that’s given many a basketball player their start.
Most players who spent time on the court at Christamore, near Belmont Avenue and West Michigan Street, didn’t go as far as Downing, an Indiana University center who was the Big Ten’s MVP in 1973. Downing played two years with the Boston Celtics and is a veteran college sports administrator. After 10 years at Texas Tech University, he returned to Indiana in 2011 as athletics director at Marian University.
Facing a shutdown in 2010, Christamore House began to turn around its finances last year under a new executive director, William Scott. A retired Eli Lilly & Co. executive, Scott also had spent time at Christamore House while growing up.
