The Vigo County planning commission voted unanimously Wednesday to back a request from Indianapolis-based CountryMark to explore for oil and gas several miles south of Terre Haute.
CountryMark attorney Louis Britton said the company already has leases on much of the rural property around the drilling site, The Tribune-Star reported.
CountryMark's oil find on land near Terre Haute belonging to the Hulman family that owns the Indianapolis Motor Speedway contributed to Indiana's oil production hitting a 10-year high in 2011.
Other landowners in the area have sought permission for oil drilling, but one request was rejected this spring after nearby residents complained about potential odors and health risks.
