Sheila Kennedy [July 16] discusses the Islam of her imagination, the Islam of every progressive’s dreams, Islam without several of its crucial features and articles of belief—holy war, martyrdom and the treatment of non-believers.

The answer will no doubt be that Christianity and Judaism contain similar expressed values and practices. Yes, centuries ago, a long time in the past.

Jihad and martyrdom are vibrant, living, fundamental aspects of Islam today. The statement is punctuated by the sound of bombs exploding from India to France, from Bulgaria to Nigeria, from Thailand to the United States.
