The Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation has awarded Teach for America’s Indianapolis office a nearly $1.6 million grant to help recruit and train teachers to teach in the city’s public school system.

In addition, the funds will support the Indianapolis Principal Fellowship, a collaboration between Teach for America and Columbia University’s Teachers College that recruits and trains Teach for America alumni to become principals in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis-based Fairbanks foundation will award the funds to the local Teach for America office over the next three years.

Founded in 1986, Fairbanks is a private foundation that has three primary focus areas: health, the vitality of Indianapolis, and sustainable employment.

The New York-based Teach for America recruits college graduates and professionals to teach two years in high-need schools. This fall, more than 10,000 members will be teaching in 46 urban and rural regions across the country.
