A massive reorganization at radio giant Clear Channel Communications began as expected today.

Industry Web site Radio-Info.com reported this morning that jobs cuts were under way as the San Antonio-based company broke the news to employees both in one-on-one sessions and staff meetings.

Clear Channel employs about 50 people in Indianapolis at three radio stations and its Clear Channel Outdoor billboard unit, but the local impact of the cuts was not immediately clear. Indiana market manager Rick Green did not return a phone call by IBJ Daily’s deadline.

The Wall Street Journal and New York Post reported this weekend that the restructuring – intended to save as much as $400 million – will include layoffs across the company’s radio, outdoor advertising and international divisions, as well as cuts to programming budgets and consolidation of back-office operations.

Clear Channel is expected to move toward a national programming model that would require less local staffing.

Its Indianapolis stations include WRZX-FM 103.3, WNDE-AM 1260 and WFBQ-FM 94.7, where the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show originates.
