Officials say Amazon.com Inc.'s new warehouse and distribution center in southern Indiana has started operations with more than 1,000 workers.

The building with more than 1 million square feet opened up this week in a business park at the former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant in Jeffersonville.

Mayor Mike Moore said the online retailer has between 1,200 and 1,600 employees working two shifts at the center.

The Jeffersonville warehouse is Amazon's fifth large facility in Indiana. Other centers are in Indianapolis and the suburban communities of Whitestown and Plainfield.

Amazon announced plans for the new warehouse in March after reaching an economic incentive agreement with the state that calls for $2 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $300,000 in training grants.

At the time, the company said it planned to hire up to 1,050 workers by 2015 as part of a $150 million expansion.Turn lanes have been added to nearby roads to handle additional traffic, the News and Tribune reported.

Police Chief Chris Grimm said 300 to 500 trucks a day are expected to come and go from the center when it's fully operational.
