While getting students to behave is pretty much hopeless, Indiana Rail Road said it plans to do a better job staying out of the way by increasing train speeds through Bloomington to 25 mph versus the current 10 mph.
That means it will take a train two minutes to pass a grade crossing instead of six minutes.
Tom Hoback, INRD’s founder and CEO, said the increased speeds are thanks to track and crossing upgrades.
The privately held, 500-mile railroad was founded in 1986 and has spent $150 million improving infrastructure acquired largely from older and bigger railroads over the years.
Much of its cargo consists of agricultural and industrial goods, along with coal that feeds electric generating plants.
