Environmental Protection Agency regional administrator Bharat Mathu said in a letter to IDEM that his office wants to talk about the changes to determine their impact on federal programs.
Environmental groups contend the changes could weaken protections for the state’s air, land and water.
To go into effect, the proposed policy must be available for public inspection for 45 days. The document is available on IDEM’s Web site, but IDEM has not officially put the policy up for public comment.
