Indianapolis International Airport is prepared to host possibly hundreds of passengers stranded by a winter storm that's smothered much of the country's midsection with snow.

Airport spokesman Carlo Bertolini said Wednesday afternoon that more than half of the approximately 300 passenger flights expected in and out of the airport for the day had been canceled.

Airport officials will provide stranded passengers with something to sleep on, and restaurants will stay open late to serve them.

Bertolini said that the airport's runways were open but that the storm's size was causing troubles at airline hubs as well. More than 1,500 flights have been canceled around the U.S., according to FlightAware, a Houston-based airline tracking service.

Bertolini said it could take a few days to get travelers on other flights since most planes are at least 85 percent filled around Christmas. He recommended that travelers check with their airlines before heading to the airport.
