Nineteen small businesses from across the state, including two in Indianapolis, received inaugural Economic Development through Entrepreneurship awards today.

Sponsored by the Indiana Economic Development Corp.’s 10 regional small-business development centers, the awards recognize client companies that are both established and emerging.

Indianapolis-based Safis Solutions LLC, which provides regulatory-compliance and quality-assurance management to pharmaceutical and medical-device firms, was honored as an established company.

Other businesses recognized in the established category were Comforts of Home Inc. (Marion), Criterion Health Inc. (Terre Haute), Dave’s Sports Den (Evansville), Hanapin Marketing (Bloomington) Integrity Investigations LLC (South Bend), Ladder 51 Flame Broiled Wings (Madison), Lakeside Wealth Management Group LLC (Chesterton), Preventive Maintenance (Fort Wayne) and Vasc-Alert LLC (West Lafayette).

IndyParentSource.com, an online provider of parenting directories, was recognized as an emerging enterprise.

Others honored in the emerging category were Buckeye Street Meats (Osgood), BurnGlo Manufacturing Inc. (Huntingburg), Goshen Birth Center (Goshen), Jane Rowe Realty (Terre Haute), Success Trek (Valparaiso), Surplus Hardware and Salvage (Muncie), The Kreole Kid LLC (Peru) and The Little Builder Toy Co. (South Whitley).

Collectively, the recipients employ 185 people in Indiana and increased sales last year by $750,000.

“There is no better story to tell than that of a homegrown Hoosier company that continues to grow and create new jobs,” Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman said in a statement.

About 26 million small businesses employ more than half of the private work force nationwide, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.
