Mayor Greg Ballard announced Friday that Capitol Commons will be rededicated in honor of Hudnut, the Republican who began the push to revitalize downtown during his four terms in office from 1976 to 1992. It will be called Hudnut Commons.
The Capitol Commons parking garage, at the northwest corner of Maryland Street and Capitol Avenue, is due for a $5 million upgrade, which will include the open space above it.
Mayor's office spokeswoman Paula Freund said there's also a private fund-raising effort underway to erect a statue in honor of Hudnut.
Hudnut was scheduled to be in Indianapolis on Friday afternoon for other reasons, but Ballard and other city officials planned to surprise him with the rededication ceremony.
