The agreement allows students who complete an associate of science in elementary education degree at an Ivy Tech campus to transfer those credits toward a bachelor of science in elementary education degree offered at all IU campuses.
“It will open the door to new career opportunities for many Hoosiers, and it will help the state of Indiana fill a critical demand for well-trained elementary school teachers,” IU President Michael McRobbie said in a statement.
McRobbie joined Ivy Tech President Thomas J. Snyder today at the Statehouse to sign the final agreement marking the transfer.
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development lists elementary school teacher as one of the state’s hottest jobs and forecasts a 12-percent increase in teacher employment between 2006 and 2016.
Statewide, more than 1,500 students are enrolled in Ivy Tech’s education program. Certain courses that count toward the education degree at Ivy Tech will be accepted as equivalents at IU. They include language, arts and mathematics courses, as well as some introductory education classes.
Previous transfer agreements between the schools include criminal justice, nursing and six liberal arts degrees.
More than 100,000 students are enrolled at eight IU campuses across the state. With more than 120,000 students enrolled, Ivy Tech is the state’s largest public post-secondary institution.
