The television news honor was for a six-month investigation into Internal Revenue Service mismanagement that resulted in fraudulent tax refunds for undocumented workers. Some of the refunds were sent to families of illegal immigrants living in other countries.
“WTHR’s stunning investigation exposed not only how illegal immigrants were bilking billions in tax refunds from the Internal Revenue Service but also how the IRS had known of the scamming and failed to stop it,” judges said. The Peabody awards were handed out this month at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
The report was the work of WTHR employees Bob Segall, Cyndee Hebert, Bill Ditton, Steve Rhodes, Jacob Jennings, Kris Burke and Steve Wolfe.
