A jury has awarded a Lafayette woman $157 million dollars in a lawsuit against the makers of a tree stand that malfunctioned, leading to the death of her husband. Carol Simonton filed the lawsuit in February 2006, four months after her husband, Timothy Simonton, 42, was found hanging from a tree where he had been scouting for deer. No one representing defendants L & L Enterprises of Mississippi, Ol’ Man Tree Stands of Florida or TRS Inc. showed up for the trial.
