Also approved yesterday were changes allowing nursing homes to designate areas where smoking is permitted and allowing communities to pass tougher restrictions even after the bill’s original deadline of 2010.
The bill originally would have banned smoking in all enclosed public places, including restaurants, bars, bowling alleys and casinos.
Rep. Charlie Brown Charlie Brown (D-Gary) and other proponents said the ban would lower health care costs and protect more people from secondhand smoke. But bar owners and casino advocates said it would hurt business and cost jobs.
It’s now eligible for a final vote in the House. If it passes, it would move to the Senate.
