The bill would lower tax rates for casinos at the state’s pari-mutuel tracks in Anderson and Shelbyville. They’re struggling to pay debts they took on to pay $250 million each in slot machine licensing fees.
The bill would also allow the state’s 11 riverboat casinos to deduct from their wagering income some of the free credits they give out as promotions, as long as the credits exceed the previous year’s total.
The bill approved moves to the full Senate, where it might face trouble. Senate Tax Chairman Brandt Hershman, a Republican from Monticello, said his committee has taken a hard line on new tax incentives given the state’s tight fiscal condition.
