Toyota says it is hiring slightly more new workers than first expected as it increases production at its southwestern Indiana factory.

The automaker announced last year that it would add about 400 employees to the Princeton factory's work force so it could build 50,000 more Highlander SUVs a year.

Toyota officials said Tuesday they would end up hiring about 50 workers more than that by the end of July.

Toyota spokesman Pat Wathen told the Evansville Courier & Press that the new hires will come from among temporary employees who work for a staffing company. That company is expected to fill those positions in the temporary pool.

The hiring will give the factory where Sienna minivans and Sequoia SUVs are also built about 4,500 workers.

Princeton is about 150 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
