Northern Indiana Public Service Co. says it is planning a $1 billion project over the next several years to modernize much of its electrical network.

The Merrillville-based utility's proposal includes replacing hundreds of miles of underground and above-ground electrical lines and some 75 substation transformers.

NIPSCO CEO Jim Stanley told The Times of Munster that the work would involve all the counties it serves across the northern third of the state, where it has some 457,000 electricity customers and 786,000 natural gas customers.

The company has filed a request with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission for annual rate increases of about 1 percent from 2015 through 2020 for the work.

Stanley says NIPSCO doesn't expect a rate decision until next year. If approved, the improvement work could begin in mid-2014.
