Pence says new agency to help students find work

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence says he's creating a new state agency that will gear public education to better meet the needs of employers, a move that the state's top public education official said she was not consulted on.

Pence signed an executive order Friday forming the Center for Education and Career Innovation. He says the agency will work to align education and career and workforce training, helping to better prepare students for future careers and provide employers with skilled workers.

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce praises the move, but a Democratic state legislator says the agency is unneeded bureaucracy.

A spokesman for Democratic state Superintendent Glenda Ritz says the Republican governor didn't mention the agency's creation when she met with him earlier this week.
