The 9,000-seat Wigwam was built in 1962 on Anderson High School’s campus. It is the second largest high school basketball venue in the world, ranked behind the Fieldhouse in New Castle.
The Anderson Community School Corp. board voted 4-2 to close two elementary schools, a middle school and a vocational school, and move other programs. It’s an effort to trim $5 million, or about 5 percent, from the district’s operating budget.
The aging Wigwam has been a drain on the school district’s budget, with a utility bill that’s the district’s third highest.
