The extended benefits program is for those who have exhausted up to 59 weeks of state and federal unemployment checks. Those in the program can collect unemployment for an additional 13 weeks, but they must apply for three jobs a week and must accept any job that pays at least minimum wage.
Indiana Department of Workforce Development officials say the program is a last resort for people struggling to find work.
About 3,400 residents will immediately qualify, with about 2,000 more added to the program each week. The department said today it is sending letters to those who qualify.
