The aim of the program, dubbed Talent Opportunity Success, is to better prepare northeast Indiana’s workforce for job opportunities in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The grant underscores the region’s efforts to transform its economy and compete for future high-tech jobs, according to Kathy Friend, chairwoman of the Fort Wayne foundation’s board.
Goals of the program include retraining at least 1,200 workers during the next three years, enhancing the advanced manufacturing program at Ivy Tech-Northeast, expanding engineering and technology programs at IUPUI-Fort Wayne, and creating tech high schools within area school corporations.
The aerospace and defense industries are particular targets of the program. Workforce development leaders project those sectors in the region will produce more than 4,000 new and replacement jobs within the next decade.
The grant will be made to foundation affiliate Community Partnerships Inc.
Lilly Endowment had $7.7 billion in assets at the end of 2007. It was founded in 1937 using Eli Lilly and Co. stock donated by members of the Lilly family.
