Pence makes last-ditch push to salvage preschool proposal

Gov. Mike Pence is making a last-ditch effort to salvage a key piece of his legislative agenda that would expand education for low-income families.

Pence is heading to the Shepherd Community Center in Indianapolis to highlight his request that the state provide vouchers for children from low-income families to attend preschool.

The governor never introduced his own measure, but instead threw his support behind a House Republican plan that would have established a pilot program. But the measure ran into concerns in the Senate, where lawmakers amended it to create a committee to would study the issue instead.

Pence's agenda has struggled to gain traction in the General Assembly during his second session. Other key measures backed by the governor have either been delayed or watered down.
