Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett wants school districts to make up a day of school for each day they miss starting next year, ending a practice that allowed exceptions. Bennett said half-days and parent-teacher conference days will no longer count toward the required 180 days of instructional time.
The House voted along party lines today to prevent those changes and put current practice into law.
But the House bill is likely to have a short life. The leader of the GOP-controlled Senate said the bill is going nowhere, and Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels said he’ll veto the proposal if it reaches his desk.
