A central Indiana county's old jail is about to go on the auction block.

The tan brick building on the courthouse square in downtown Lebanon was the Boone County Jail from 1938 until 1992. It still has operating doors on the cells that once held about 30 prisoners, along with a commercial kitchen and a walk-in vault where evidence was stored.

Boone County Sheriff Ken Campbell told WTHR-TV he started his career at the jail as a 19-year-old guard and he regards the building as a valuable piece of the county's history.

Key Auctioneers vice president Seth Seaton said he's unsure what the 14,312-square-foot building might sell for in the April 10 auction. Seaton said the building needs a buyer with a vision of turning it perhaps into a restaurant or museum.

Almost 4,300 square feet of the building is residential after previously serving as a sheriff's residence. The building also has a two-car garage.
