The announcement from the Nebraska-based chain comes five years after it abandoned plans amid the recession to build a store near Interstate 65 and County Line Road in Greenwood.
Construction is set to begin later this year with a planned opening of fall 2015. The store will be located at Interstate 69 and Campus Parkway in Saxony, near Hamilton Town Center.
Cabela’s calls itself the world’s largest direct marketer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor merchandise. Its only other Indiana store is in Hammond.
“For years, thousands of Hoosiers have faithfully supported Cabela’s through our catalogs, website and neighboring retail locations,” Cabela’s CEO Tommy Millner said in a prepared statement. “Now those loyal customers have a second Cabela’s store to call their own.”
The store’s exterior will feature Cabela’s signature log construction, stonework, wood siding and metal roofing. The interior will feature museum-quality wildlife displays, a mountain with a built-in aquarium, gun library, indoor archery range, fudge shop and deli.
The store is expected to employ 170.
Founded in 1961, Cabela’s operates 51 stores across the country with plans to open 23 more in the next two years.
Meanwhile, Cabela’s competitor Gander Mountain is preparing to open a store at 216 Gable Crossing Drive in Avon in the spring and has filed plans to build a 45,540-square-foot store at 2175 N. Barrett Drive in Greenfield. The St. Paul-based company also has locations at 5702 E. 86th St. in Indianapolis and 1049 Emerson Ave. in Greenwood.
