Indianapolis air travelers will have a new option for flights to Washington, D.C., with Southwest Airlines Co.' expansion of service from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The airline announced Monday that it will more than double flights from Reagan National by year's end. Among the expansions is a new route to Indianapolis, which will start in November, the airline said.

The Dallas-based carrier is purchasing 54 slots that became available as a result of a settlement of litigation by the U.S. Justice Department against the American Airlines and US Airways merger. Reagan National is the airport nearest the Capitol, and Indianapolis currently has non-stop service there on American and US Airways.

In addition to Indianapolis, Southwest is adding service to Chicago, Dallas, New Orleans, Tampa, Nashville and Akron.

Indianapolis travelers can also reach Washington, D.C., on United Airlines' non-stop flights to Washington Dulles International and Southwest's flights to Baltimore-Washington International.
