Barnes & Thornburg LLP has opened a law office in Atlanta – its eighth overall and first in the Southeast.

The Indianapolis-based law firm sought an Atlanta presence to serve existing clients in the region and to be in a city considered a business center, said Alan Levin, Barnes & Thornburg’s managing partner, in a written statement.

Stuart C. Johnson and Jason A. Bernstein, former partners in the Atlanta office of St. Louis-based Bryan Cave Powell Goldstein, have joined the firm to launch the new practice. The office is located at the Atlanta Financial Center building in the Buckhead district.

Barnes & Thornburg intends to build a full-service office in Atlanta, similar to its approach in Chicago, where the firm has more than 70 lawyers in a practice it opened in 1994, Levin said.

Besides Indianapolis, Barnes & Thornburg has Indiana offices in Elkhart, Fort Wayne and South Bend. Other locations are in Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Washington, D.C.

With about 430 lawyers overall, Barnes & Thornburg is the 109th largest firm in the country, according to National Law Journal.
