Ryan Hunter-Reay's narrow Indianapolis 500 win brought him a $2.49 million payday.

The overall purse was $14.23 million. The winnings were announced Monday night.

Hunter-Reay edged Helio Castroneves by 0.060 seconds Sunday in the second-closest margin of victory in the history of the race. He became the first American to win the Indy 500 since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006.

"I'm a proud American boy, that's for sure," he said in Victory Lane after the race.

Hunter-Reay recorded a 220.927 mph final lap to Castroneves' 220.729 mph, preventing the Brazilian from joining A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears as a four-time winner.

Hunter-Reay topped all other drivers by leading nine times for 56 laps after starting 19th. The last time a driver led the most laps in the race from such a low starting position was in 1975, when Wally Dallenbach led 96 laps after starting from the 21st position.

Castroneves earned $785,194 for his runner-up finish.

Marco Andretti finished third, Carlos Munoz was fourth and Kurt Busch was sixth as Andretti Autosports captured four of the top six positions. Andretti earned $585,194 and Munoz won $449,194. Busch's $423,889 paycheck included a $25,000 top-rookie bonus.

Juan Pablo Montoya finished fifth in his return to the Indianapolis 500 for the first time since winning his only other start in 2000. He collected $441,944.

Pole sitter Ed Carpenter, who finished 27th after a crash, received $463,694, including the $100,000 pole award.
