Indiana employers added 17,400 jobs to payrolls in June, including a 7,400-job boost in the government sectors, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development announced Friday morning.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate still eked up from 5.7 percent in May to 5.9 percent in June, in large part due to about 4,000 Indiana residents returning to the labor force to look for work, the DWD said.

The state added 10,000 private sector jobs during the month. The biggest gains were in the leisure and hospitality (3,200), construction (2,700), and trade, transportation and utilities sectors (2,300). Manufacturers added 2,200 employees.

But the biggest gains came in government employment, which includes public school and hospital payrolls. About 7,400 jobs were added in June, primarily in education.

The Indianapolis-Carmel area added 5,900 jobs from the previous month, bringing the total to 963,700, an increase of 0.6 percent from May 2014 and 2.9 percent from May 2013.

Metro figures are not adjusted for seasonal fluctuations in the labor force, thus are best compared between the same months in different years.

In June, Indiana had a lower unemployment rate than the United States (6.1 percent), Illinois (7.1 percent), Kentucky (7.4 percent) and Michigan (7.5 percent), but lagged Ohio (5.5 percent).
