A joint venture between Ohio and Indiana aimed at advancing drone operations for businesses and government has formalized its partnership with a southwestern Ohio city and airport.

The Ohio/Indiana Unmanned Aircraft Systems Center on Tuesday announced the formal partnership with the city of Springfield and Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport.

The center's director also said hanger space planned at the Springfield airport will make it the "go to" location for schools and businesses looking to support unmanned aircraft development and operations.

The city and the center also are collaborating on a new precision agriculture program at Clark State Community College that educates students in the operation of unmanned aircraft systems, remote sensing and data processing.

Springfield's economic director said the $500,000 partnership with the college allows project collaboration and a sharing of assets. It could lead to the construction of new hanger space.

Aviation experts told the Dayton Daily News that the unmanned aircraft industry generates $89 billion in revenue worldwide. It is expected to take off in the United States once Federal Aviation Association regulations are fully decided. Agricultural and power-line companies are among those interested in using UAS systems, they said.
