A union official said about 100 workers have been laid off from a central Indiana auto-parts plant over the last two weeks.

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers steward Patrick Owens said Emcon Technologies is laying off workers at the Columbus plant because of a slowdown as it awaits new business from Cummins Inc. and Volkswagen.

Owens said he was optimistic that most of the workers would eventually be brought back.

A telephone call to the plant today connected to a recording that did not provide a way to leave a message.

Emcon was formerly Arvin-Meritor’s Emissions Technologies Group, which was sold in 2007 to a New York-based investment group. The Troy, Mich.-based company makes emissions-control equipment for car and truck engines.
